The Rulenge - Ngara Agroforestry Initiative is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a sustainable and productive ecosystem in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rulenge - Ngara in Tanzania, East Africa. It involves the integration of trees, crops, and livestock in a way that benefits all components. Agroforestry initiatives refer to organized efforts and projects aimed at promoting and implementing practices leading to sustainable land-use systems that enhance environmental health and agricultural productivity.
The Rulenge - Ngara Agroforestry Initiative is new but agroforestry is not. Agroforestry is an ancient practice that provides food, medicine, and materials while protecting and conserving the environment.
The benefits of Agroforestry are many. Agroforestry shields livestock and crops from wind and extreme weather; increases crop yield; provides habitat for pollinators; creates microclimates; slows runoff; improves water quality; reduces soil erosion; and builds soil health.
